In 1759, General James Wolfe and the British army defeated the French army. Due to the assimilation scheme (1763-1774), an intellectual opposition and a quiet revolution (1944-1959) French was defined as the only official language of Quebec in areas of provincial jurisdiction (1977, a brief summary of history by a layman ;-) Today Quebec is the only province whose sole and only official language is French.
